Stories of Women and Roses:
from flower symbol of the Virgin to instrument of female emancipation .
Marco Foghinazzi, Speaker
“Among the protagonists of the appointment… Giuseppina Bonaparte. The wife of the great general Napoleon was a great collector of roses and became a fundamental personality for the botanical history of the rose. In fact, he created a wonderful rose garden at his home in Chateau de la Malmaison where he collected numerous specimens, ensuring its survival. Many roses that we have the opportunity to buy today derive from varieties reproduced and kept by Giuseppina and her gardeners. She surrounded herself with numerous collaborators, fra cui il grande Pierre Joseph Redouté, nicknamed the Raphael of the flowers. He created a series of botanical plates whose subject was precisely the Malmaison roses. Below I am sending you a photo of one of his botanical tables.”
